MULCAHY MEETS MULCAHY:
Earlier this summer Mary Mulcahy got the opportunity to meet her namesake,
Harley Hoppe and Howard Belvoirs 2007 Washington champion three-year-old
Mulcahy, who is stabled at Doris Konecnys Czech-Mate Farm in Enumclaw. A
few years ago, Dan Corby, who partnered with Hoppe and trainer Belvoir in many
top local racehorses, was reading The Seattle Times and was struck by the tale
of a woman who had lost everything and was then living out of her car. Her name
Mary Mulcahy. The Irish-born Mulcahy fought a long and hard battle to
regain her life after a car accident and ended up pursuing her case,
unrepresented, through the courts to the Washington State Supreme Court, and
won. Remembering that story, Corby, who unfortunately never got the opportunity
to meet Mary before his death in October 2008, suggested the name to Belvoir
and Hoppe for a promising Tribunal colt, in honor of the womans courage
and perseverance, qualities he hoped the future racehorse would also
have. |
